Oh dear sun
Hug me with your golden rays.
Let your warmth seep into me
Beading up a reality with background music.

Escape - 2
As she ran to meet her younger siblings at the corner of the street, her mind wandered back to a few days,
And she stopped dead on the street
" How will he keep alive for the next God knows how many hours?"
She was being pushed and pulled by her siblings down to the next block, yet she was numb, she dragged along like a lifeless being, he 'chaadar' falling down from her head.
"Hum ne Ali saans rokna nahi sikhaya, woh mar jayega"
She said it out aloud. And slumped down on in the middle of the road. Tears falling recklessly.
Would it be the end of a new beginning?
And she was sitting on crossroads yet again.

Umbrella - Chapter 1
She ran as fast as she could. Looking back every now and then.
Stumbling upon rocks, wood and her own feet.
She was scared out of her wits, or was she?
A trespasser would assume so. And maybe she was. The darkness of the night started to seep into her pores. Dissolving in her blood making her limbs go weak. But she had acres to cross and alleys to walk.
She had to escape. She needed to get away. Now more than ever.
The road felt sharp and warm under her feet. Imprinting its patterns into her soft skin.
The softness that once was.
Hearing them howling like wolves behind her back. Some dragging their hockey sticks along with them adding scratching sounds to the already creepy background noise. The crickets, the distant trains and a ‘chowkidaar’ whistling to make sure there weren’t any burglars around.
And for once that whistle did not drift her brain into a million questions that popped into her thoughts. Like what does a whistle have to do with catching thieves? How could you make sure people were sleeping?
But today she ran. She ran eliminating all her thoughts. She ran for the love of God, for freedom and for her self satisfacation. Or self respect?
The creeps were nearing. Right behind her heels and she had to dodge them.
Somehow.
The ground beneath her feet started to move faster than herself.
The heat from the strong concrete excreted heat into her feet. She so badly wanted to sit somewhere, preferably near the lake that just passed. Dive into that pure liquid, wash all her worries and her soul.
Wash off the darkness and the heat.
Take me to a place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
But she knew better than to stop. Better than to let those wolves capture her again.
And so she ran faster.
Faster than she had ever imagined she could.
Reciting a prayer in her head she ran for her life blindly into a narrow alley that ended into a crossroad.
Yes. This could be it. Her escape. Her new beginning.
Looking back one last time she dove into the dark bushes aligning the road.
A forest.
She hid behind what seemed like an oak tree. A shelter.
Catching her breath. Holding it in. She watched the goons looking for her frantically. Some heading towards the right and the others straight.
But could this have been this easy? Just dodging them into the darkness? Where they that easily fooled?
So she sat there longer. Praying. Squinting her eyes shut. She prayed to God. All of them. That someone would listen. And she’d be set free like a bird.

Soja re,
Soja re. Sapnon main khoja re
Putting the last thoughts to sleep.
Tossing and turning into a whirlpool of sewn dreams
Jugnu panchi, pyare pyare

And just like last time.
She cradles him to sleep.
Letting the dark evaporate from his pores,
Only to condense into hers.

Love-Hate-Abuse
The door clicked close, and she tip-toed into the orangely lit room, dark like days and orange like nights.
Black like the rage smelling room. She sneaked into the bathroom, hoping the silhouette near the window did not notice the walking shadows.
Dabbing her face with the white soft towel she sat down on the bed, turning the lamp on. Hoping to erase the tension in the atmosphere. But nothing changed. The silhouette, unmoveable. Cold. And dark near the window. Just as she left 15 minutes ago.
She sighed and pulled her back into a loose pony tail. Easing her self on the bed.
Just as she was about to reach for the book she had been reading for a week, her hand was jerked away.
She was so engaged in her thoughts, that she failed to hear the heavy footsteps on the floor. Or did she ignore?
The silhouette was now standing in front of her.
As manly as it could be, as strong as it needed to be.
And she felt the entire world spinning, her gaze stuck on his red eyes, clenched jaw and stone like fingers.
Forgetting to swallow her spit, she stared and in a matter of seconds, she was up on her feet yanked by the pony tail.
“ Why did you leave?” He roared.
A wave of pain shot through her skull, she tried to grab onto his strong wrist in an attempt at loosening the manly grip.
“ Tell me, why did you leave the house?” He inquired again, giving her head a jerk.
“ Ow” She hissed and cried. Squinting her eyes. Preferring the silence she stayed mute.
“ I am taking to you God Dammit” He inquired in rage, his fingers now digging into her flesh, her tiny frame.
Mute again, she opened her eyes. A sea of pain, hurt, love, and hurt swam in.
A blow on her nose, and fell to her feet. Bleeding.
“ Can you answer me now, why did you leave the house when I asked you not to?, Do I not matter anymore?, Do my orders mean nothing to you” He got down on his knees, and pulled her face towards him, his eyes hazy, a little green with a color of hysteria.
She felt the wetness trickle down her nose, she dabbed at it, making herself hiss in pain, in agony.
And then, just like nothing happened, like the color red, in any form any shape, trickling down her made him normal.
While she sat there crying, in the midst of double roads, she had to decide today, this was it. She could not take this any longer.
The smell of the room changed, the air changed, Said without words and he walked up to her again.
“ please mujhe chhor ke mat jao. Main tumhare baghair mar jaunga. I’m sorry that I hit you, don’t go”
He cried like a baby.
Grabbing on to her hand, but she moved away. She was stronger than he was, she would not break in front of this man, would not fall here.
“ Dekho, main yeh sab waapis daal deta hoon, and it’ll all be back to normal, I promise, pakka wala” he said like an innocent kid while trying to put the blood back into her nose.

Fall 2
Standing blind folded, she had a secretive smile spread across her crimson face.
“ Kidher aye hain hum?” She whispered to the man beside her.
Without replying back, he grabbed her by the elbow and walked to the old building standing right in front of them.
Women laughing, men talking, they walked into the creaky old wooden door.
“ Must be my favorite restaurant.” she smiled to her self yet again, rubbing away beads of sweat trickling down her forehead.
But something seemed different, this place did not smell familiar. The air was murky, thick and pungent.
She felt bodies pushing here, one side to the other.
And all of a sudden, everything seemed wrong. Struggling to free herself of the blind fold and reach for her husband at the same time she fell on the floor.
She heard sharp threads of voices making their way to hear ears, laughter it was.
Looking around the room, still on the floor, she struggled to recognize the faces in front of her.
To recognize where she was.
Trying to reach for the man who had brought her here. Her husband, she looked to the left.
He was gone.
Leaving her with these animals, to chew off her soul bit by bit.

Fall 1
Fixing his collar he walked down the stairs. Walking on the cold marble floor, he could see “himself “ in it. He made his way towards the lounge where his wife sat attending to a maid.
“ Why aren’t you dressed up yet” Inquired he. Lifting an eyebrow in agitation.
Standing up, nervous she tried to speak up “ actually, she, the..” weakly pointing towards the old lady sitting on the floor.
“ Okay enough, I would hear no more. Go now. I want you down here, dressed. In 15 minutes” lifting his right hand up, letting the steel watch slide a little on his wrist.
She hurried, carrying her svelte self towards the marbled staircase.
15 minutes later talking on cell-phone he put the car in the first gear.
“ You’ve got everything ready right?” he inquired anxiously while adjusting the rear view mirror.
Trying not let excitement creep her already mushy senses, she let out a happy sigh.
“ and she thought he had forgotten their anniversary” the thought made her smile, coloring her already rosy cheeks.
“ Where are we going?” setting her gaze on the road, right where his was.
“ Oh you’ll see” he said, meaningfully, caressing his chin.
Lost in her thoughts, staring out the window, she let the moment sink in, not realizing the narrow dark streets they had turned into.

Gestures
The strong winds on the beach made her 'dupatta' fly about.
After endless attempts at tying it and pushing it on the side, she let it go.
Sensing her discomfort, her walked to her side, wrapped the duppatta around her petite self
and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. Securing the piece of cloth in place.
Main khush naseebi hoon teri
Mujhe bhi raas hai tu
Tera libaas hoon main aur
Mera libaas hai tu

Escape 1
Covering her head with the cotton scarf she walked around the drawing room presenting the refreshments.
Feeling her fathers eyes digging into her by the second. Tearing her soul apart.
Just another hour and she will leave.
She will, walking down the corridor she thought to herself.
She had to make preparations. Some calculations.
This house has always been this crowded. Muscular men at every door of the house, watching God knows what.
And the rooms filled with bearded men. Religious and pious to be very precise, with very unpious intentions.
So she took a run for it.
Grabbed her baby brother and her baby sister first,
Asked the other two to meet her at the corner of the street.
Covering her head with a huge 'chadar' She asked the 'chawkidaar' to let her out.
He had seen her grow up, he had seen her mother grow up, he had been more like a father than her own father could ever be.
He let them out.
Looking sideways, covering half of her face with the dupatta she walked cautiously towards the empty plot right in front of her house.
And then next thing she knew, she was trying to fit both her baby siblings into a hollow log and topping it with lots of sand.
They will never be able to find them here. She thought while pushing the log into the curve of the rock. Making sure they were safe.
" Saans lete rehna, main tum dono ko lene aungi. Wadah"
and she ran away

His world
He sat across the room, eyeing her.
Like everything was at stand still.
The world ceased to exist but her.
The slight dangle of her earrings at her laughter.
The way her lips curved in a frown.
It was all roses and glitter.
But she was indifferent.
Waise toh teri na main bhi dhoondli maine apni khushi

Identity
Ghoomti rehti thi woh,
Chappa chappa chhana,
Kona kona dhoonda,
Ek tasveer haath main liye
Talash-e-gumshudah
Wearing her read coat, she stood in the middle of the road, again today.
Asking any and every passerby to have known about the person in the picture she held.
A little torn, water marked on the edges.
The person.
Her.

Because what I posess is not truly mine,
A little of them, because they were a little of theirs,
A pinch of her, because she had the same glowing eyes.
And her also, this smile, she pasted it on me.
An enormous amount of him, because he taught me life
And you, because you taught me love

He ran from garden to garden,
Flower to flower.
Searching for butterflies,
Only to catch them and crush them,
Crush them like rocks in his hand,
Until they bled and cried,
Cried for mercy,
But little did he know,
His hands were stained with their blood forever,
And know the blood shall chase him like once he did.

Truth
A little less than 2 weeks.
Vanish and bliss.
Vanity and discourage
She awaits the aisle of roses and green.
Vanish and bliss.
Vanity and discourage
She awaits the aisle of roses and green.
The space between light and you.
We've reached down into space
And walked through air for nothing
Held onto the moments that were useless
And now we sit, drained, parched and unwanted by ourselves.
And walked through air for nothing
Held onto the moments that were useless
And now we sit, drained, parched and unwanted by ourselves.

Promise
Today,
A promise I make. Or two and a few
That old man walking down the street, I'd be his stick to walk with,
And I see a girl around the corner everyday, she needs new shoes,
Maybe I can use my pocket money for those
Today,
A promise I make,
To keep my word.
A promise I make. Or two and a few
That old man walking down the street, I'd be his stick to walk with,
And I see a girl around the corner everyday, she needs new shoes,
Maybe I can use my pocket money for those

Origami
Once when we built a house
It was purple
And it was blue
The windows leaked
And the pipes tied the doors
Once when we moved far away
The car drove itself
From china to mineapolis
We ate on streets
And slept on lamp posts
Again they picked up
And threw us against the trash can
Once when we built a house
It was black
And it was grey
Neend
1:43am: He got tired of chasing the crawling lights on his wall, made by the cars zooming by.
His head was heavy,
numb, yet not.
Did not feel a thing, yet did.
Emtionless.Full.
2:30am: Craving for an emotional break, to cry his heart and eyes out. He drove to her place.
She knew he wasn’t asleep.
Knew he couldn’t.
She knew him too well for him to put everything he felt and thought into words.
2:45am: Welcoming with open arms, just as he knew she would.
The room was dimly lit with a few candles.
His heart smiled at her innocence. At her Love.
2:50am: She lead him to the bed, made him sit and sat right behind him.
Kneeling into her , he lay there eyes closed. Tears at the rim of his eyes.
She let it be. Let the tears be. Knew he’d find the comfort in her, in her presence.
Guzar Jaayen Sukh Se Teri
Dukh Bhari Ratiyaan
Badal Doon Maein Tohse Ankhiyaan
Bas Maein Agar Ho Yeh Batiyaan
Maangu Duaaen Haath Uthaaye

Tohe mil jaaye
Main jaagun, Tu sojaye
...and He slipped into sweet slumber.
Shades of reality
It felt like a film running through the reel
Black and white, more black than white, Actually grey and black. White would be pure eh? Or white too.
making perfect sense, and not. Clear and blurry.
How did it feel to be carried on four shoulders? wondering today, he held onto an edge of the palanquin. Yes, he'd call it a palanquin. Maybe because he didn't have enough guts to call it what it really truly was, or maybe because She was always his princess, no matter what everyone else thought. Said.
Sapnay Samaitay, Dil Haar ke, yeh maan ke, chal diyeh
Khudh ko lapaitay, iss bahaar mein, dil haar ke, hum chalein,
Walking through acres of land, of colors, of love, of scents. Still wondering.
Jab Rang sab azad hain, toh mausam naraz hain kyun?
Saday libaas mein, Sawan naraz hai kyun?

And there were days when she sat in the darkness of night, rocking herself against the cold of the wall. Rocking herself to the rhythm of her heart and pounding ears.
Because she could do nothing to get him back.

My love,
My song is love, its love unknown
I've lost my heart inside your dream
She pens it down, inking the blank paper to life.
I feel your voice in my head
I feel inside that love
Under the orange candle light she creates
And re-creates a world
I've got to sing you one last time
I've got to go my love
She blows the candle to death.

Zindagi.
You're so, so beautiful. He whispered to the shadow sitting beside him.
That sentence was more than just words, the weightage was more than anything could ever weigh.
You know, things that you mean so truthfully that it hurts when you say it out aloud.
When it comes out nothing but a whisper, raspy and shaken.
But it means so much more.
A life.

Call out
Picking up the receiver, she pauses, and places it back on the cradle.
Hesitant.
Yearning.
Mujhe darr hai tere gurayz ka
Kahun haal-e-dil na main iss liye
Hesitant.
Yearning.
Mujhe darr hai tere gurayz ka
Kahun haal-e-dil na main iss liye

The truth
Remember you made me believe in movies?
The characters, laughter and poignant sets.
You said this was the real life,
That is was all that ever existed
And when I wanted I could catch a butterfly without ever hurting it.
So what happened to the butterfly you caught?
It left stains on your fingers, didn't it?
The characters, laughter and poignant sets.
You said this was the real life,
That is was all that ever existed
And when I wanted I could catch a butterfly without ever hurting it.
So what happened to the butterfly you caught?

Faiz
Gulon main rang bhare, bad-e-naubahar chale
chale bhi ao k gulshan k karobar chale
Qaffas udas hai yaro, saba se kuch to kaho
kahin to bahr-e-khuda aj zikr-e-yar chale
Kabhi to subh tere kunj-e-lab se ho agaz
kabhi to shab sar-e-kakul se mushkabar chale
Bara hai dard ka rishta, ye dil garib sahi
tumhare nam pe ayenge gamgusar chale
Jo ham pe guzari so guzari magar shab-e-hijran
hamare ashk teri aqabat sanwar chale
huzoor-e-yar hui daftar-e-junun ki talab
girah main le k gareban ka tar tar chale
maqam 'Faiz' koi rah main jacha hi nahin
jo ku-e-yar se nikle to su-e-dar chale

wo bhijhwa do,
-
Aik so sola chand ki raatain, aik tumhare kaandhe ka till
geeli mehendi ki khushbo, jhoot moot ke waday ko..
-
Pat jhar main kuch patton ke girne ki aahat
kaanon main ik haar pehen ke lot ai thi
pat jhar ki wo shakh abhi tak kaanp rahi hai
wo shakh gira do,
-
Mera wo samaan lota do.
Ek ijazat de do bas
Jab iss ko dafnaungi
Main bhi wahin so jaungi
Main bhi wahin sojaungi.
bin batti jab cycle ka chalaan huwa tha
ham ne kese bhooke, pyase becharon si acting ki thi
hawaldar ne ullta aik atthanni de kar bhej diya tha
aik chuwanni meri thi
wo lota do,
-
Sawan ke kuch bheege bheege din rakhay hain
aur mere ik khat main liptti raat pari hai
wo raat bhujha do,
-
aur bhi kuch samaan tumhare paas para hai,
wo bhijhwa do,

One of my favorite pieces by Gulzar.
Distance.
Did we really have to be strangers like this? she inquired, looking at him in the eye, or trying to. Trying to find something, anything. Answers maybe?, questions.
Well he?, he walked away, turning is honey glazed eyes away from hers, he disappeared into the fog.
Qasam thi tumhari, tor gaye tumhi
Waday thay tumharay, kya bhool gaye tumhi?

Health.
When hallways get empty and lights go whiter,
She sits in the corner praying..
Praying for the purple to turn pale
And the red to blend in,
She prays for the puzzles to fit

Education Emergency
More than one in ten of the world's children who don't get to go to primary school live in Pakistan. Unless you help end the country's education emergency, the world will never reach the Millennium Development Goals. Please support Pakistan's leaders by joining an urgent response by the international community to get all its children into good schools.

Of 'her' world
Come into my bed
I've got to know, know, know you
Lying in bed she reflected on the past 6 or so months of her life. Blowing out circle of tobacco smoke, not blinking. Breathing or not, she could barely make out.
She could not, she would not. She had no right what-so-ever, to make friends, have acquaintances. That too with her clients?
A relationship, are you kidding me?
Disgusted by her self she sat up, strap of her tank top slipping down her shoulder, eyes smudged black.
Was that a stack of hay or hair on her head?
A little bag of cocaine
A little bag of cocaine
Cigarettes and lies
She picked up the tiny bag on the table infront of her, and grabbed a shot glass. Gulped it down. Felt the burn of both the white fine powder and the tequila shot. Letting the darkness and ecstasy settle inside her.
Stood up stumbling towards the bathroom.
Dared to not look back. To the sleeping body.
The man she fell for.
You will never be my, you will never be my dear
Will never be my dear, dear friend
She had another "client" to attend to.

Your new twin size bed
I visit the cafe everyday now. Your moleskine tucked under my arm, ordering your favorite frappé.
Gazing outside the wide glass window you so loved. So much so that you wanted one just like it in our house after we got married.
Marriage happened.
To both of us.
Yours to her, and mine, well mine to filmmaking and scriptwriting.
I hope that window is a great source of beauty to your loft we picked together.

Stranger
Wearing her red coat, she stood in the middle of the road, again today.
Asking any and every passerby to have known about the person in the picture she held.
A little torn, water marked on the edges.
The person.
Her.

Peices
Because what I posess is not truly mine,
A little of them, because they were a little of theirs,
A pinch of her, because she had the same glowing eyes.
And her also, this smile, she pasted it on me.
An enormous amount of him, because he taught me life
And you, because you taught me love
Khalaa
A void left in her heart,
She paints it purple.
Saaghar main zindagi ko utaray chale gaye
hum bekhudi mein tumko pukare chale gaye

Fall part 2
She looked at the image in that blackened mirror now, years later.
She didn’t want to, but that face of hers made her travel time, rekindle the past into unsettling flames.
To the dark night, the night her husband..
Her thoughts where interrupted by a voice, “its time”
And she got up, more petite than before, adorned in blue and silver, opening the door to self-destruction.
Surrendering to the hungriest of eyes.
For Zee, if she's reading.

Breathless
Yeh raasta, gum hoga
Yeh darr tumhen, hai na
Main aas paas, hi kahin hoon
Itna yaqeen toh, hai naa.
I run through my mind searching for your essence. Teasing my senses it hides leaving me craving for more.

Rain
She woke up to the sound of pitter patter on the pane of her window. Rubbing her eyes, with a touch of her finger she opened the blinds and looked outside.
Rain made everything seem so beautiful, so serene and pure. Enhancing the already gorgeous greens and pinks of the nature.
‘You love this weather don’t you’ she talked to him in her head.
Reaching for the laptop she settled on the bed. Putting something soft on.
Jab ghungruon si
Bajti hain boonden
Armaan humaray
Ankhen na moonden
Just then the bell rang. Very lazily she got up, slipped on her gown and walked down the stairs.
Opened the door to find him standing front of her, humming
Mehfil main kaise
Kehden kisi se
Dil bandh raha hai
Ek ajnabi se

Unrequited.
We wait.
because that is all we can do, all that we are capable of.
Wait, for the day to start, for the night to begin. For a hug, a smile, a kiss
We wait, for life.

Wait, for the day to start, for the night to begin. For a hug, a smile, a kiss

Fireflies.
World did not come crashing down when flowers stopped blooming,
It only grew wiser, and more luminous.
It only grew wiser, and more luminous.

Burst of thought.
Days went by slower when she read, or faster. Depending on what and where she read. Her entire world revolved around books that had been thrown away. Like babies abandoned by young mothers.
It was a weird attraction.
It was a weird attraction.
Aerial.
My standing amongst others has faded out.
Im another inception you've created
Another stream you've left behind.
Just a last walk to the door
before we lose our conscious.

Dil jhoom jhoom.
He sat down by the beach,
Sand in his feet, hands, eyes.
" Jitni tu milti jaye,
utni lage thodi thodi"
And his eyes searched for life.
Zindagi.
Sand in his feet, hands, eyes.
" Jitni tu milti jaye,
utni lage thodi thodi"
And his eyes searched for life.
Zindagi.
